Somatic Movement is a safe, gentle and relaxing mat based practice which addresses chronic muscle tension by getting to know our habitual stress patterns.
It involves body scans and slow movements where we contract and release muscles in different parts of the body to help the brain sense better. Once we can sense the tension we are holding onto it is easier to let it go. The result is that over time our posture improves and we can move with more ease and fluidity and less risk of injury.
Learning Somatic Movement can also improve our confidence moving in daily life and taking on new activities.
The movements are mostly done lying quietly on a mat but we can also do movements seated, standing and walking. As the movements are gentle and slow it is suitable for all and can be adapted for different needs. Instruction is given using mostly verbal cues, to encourage participants to sense within their own bodies, but demonstrations can also be given when needed.
